It seems ironic that the Home & Garden Show was packed after last week’s severe weather, but this year’s event seemed more crowded than ever, and there seemed to be more booths as well. In addition to taking in the usual replacement windows, sunrooms, and UK\/UofL handbags, I did have a chance to talk with some friends in the flooring industry about the latest trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first stop was Mees Tile and Marble<\/a>, where a gorgeous decorative tile medallion caught my eye. Dave Thornton and I discussed the popularity of porcelain and ceramic tiles, and he noted that porcelain is very popular at Mees, especially in larger sizes, such as 18″x 18″ and 24′ x 24″.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Carrell Rogers Carpet One<\/a> I talked with Ken McDonald about what’s trending now. “Carpet is making a comeback,” said Ken. “The multicolor friezes are very forgiving for family use. I’m getting ready to put some in my own home.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kurt Erickson at River City Flooring<\/a> reports both sanded and pre-finished hardwood floors are popular, with dark colors such as walnuts being trendy, especially with designers. ‘But middle-range oak colors are also popular,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believe it or not, concrete is very flexible when it comes to the many styles of floors that can be created.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

From Rite Rug<\/a> I can add that all of the above are going strong, especially the frieze carpets, also called California Berber or “short shag.” These styles are warm, soft, and available in a range of neutral colors to complement any color design plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On another note, I was also pleased to see a special section devoted to pets at this year’s Home & Garden Show. Kentucky Humane Society<\/a> was there, as well as local businesses such as Little Eatz Pet Treats and Kibble Kart pet food delivery service. Good to see our four-legged friends recognized as an important part of our homes and lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
