Mold and Dry Rot

Many homes across the United States can develop mold, especially in the south due to its damper climates. Mold isn’t only unsightly, but it can damage your property’s structural integrity, lower its value, and cause respiratory issues for inhabitants.

Mold and mildew are caused by a moist, damp environment, which could be due to a roof leak, condensation build-up, high interior humidity, flooding, or moisture from household appliances, such as a kettle, tumble dryer, or stove.

For example, attics and roof spaces are prone to condensation, as excess moisture travels to the top of your home and settles on the surface. The condensation build-up can then lead to black spot mold, dry rot, or wet rot. Yet, lap vents reduce condensation and protect your property from excess moisture and, in turn, mold and rot.

The dangers of mold are very real so be proactive. If you see any signs, bring in a professional.

2. Termite Infestation

Termites are one of the most common hidden household issues problems for homeowners across Kentucky. They are active from Louisville and Paducah to Richmond and Lexington. The subterranean termite is the most active in the state and can unknowingly damage people’s homes. While there have been occasions when people have experienced an infestation of dry wood termites, they aren’t common in the state.

Termites tend to swarm on a warm day following rainfall, and they can even strike during winter in a heated building. The subterranean termite swarm often occurs during daylight from February to May. Prevention is always better than a cure when it comes to termites, which is why you must:

Prevent water from accumulating close to your property’s foundation with clear gutters and downspouts

Reducing humidity in crawl spaces with improved ventilation

Fixing exterior cracks

Storing firewood and untreated lumber outdoors and covering them in soil

If you currently have a termite infestation, you must contact pest control to eliminate the problem immediately.

3. Faulty Electrical Wiring

Faulty wiring cannot only impair your electric connections, but it can pose a danger, as it can cause a fire or electrocution in the home.

As the wires will lurk underneath along your walls and ceiling, you might be unaware of the problem. However, there are various electrical wiring warning signs to familiarize yourself with, such as:

Flickering or dimming lights

Discolored, charred, or buzzing outlets and switches

Mild or serious electric shocks from an outlet or switch

An unpleasant burning smell

Fuses or breakers that go out often

If you suspect your property has faulty wiring or are selling your home in the future, you must ensure your electrical wiring is up to code. It can prevent a serious accident and protect your property’s value.

Everyone wants to live in a beautiful, safe, and healthy home each day.
