Believe me, I see it on a daily basis when I&#8217;m out showing my clients homes in Louisville. So let&#8217;s have some fun and talk about the worst of the worst. From the more common design mistakes to the ones that really make you <em>cringe<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Case in point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote twitter-tweet is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>First time ever! Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#10 Two-story Great Rooms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_2story.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a two story great room. Not to mention additional heating\/cooling costs, all for what? So that you can feel like you live in a mansion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a trend that&#8217;s on the way out, thank heavens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#9 Popcorn or Textured Ceilings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"307\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_textured_ceiling.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a textured ceiling. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_textured_ceiling.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_textured_ceiling-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Mud Swirl technique pictured above might sound like a good idea, but as with the 1980&#8217;s anti-drug campaign, Just Say No.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosebud Stomp, Hawk and Trowel or *shudder* Popcorn textured ceilings are something that should never have happened. I mean, who came up with this? I think we can all agree it was a bad idea. Smooth, white, classic&#8230; <em>that&#8217;s<\/em> what ceilings should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#8 Theme Rooms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_theme.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a camo theme room. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_theme.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_theme-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">If you don&#8217;t want your son to wake up one morning with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complex_post-traumatic_stress_disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PTSD<\/a> then don&#8217;t copy the room in this photo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most often, these rooms are done by self-styled &#8220;designers&#8221; who also happen to be one of the home&#8217;s owners. True designers don&#8217;t go there. And you shouldn&#8217;t either! Friends, help each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#7 Unnecessary &#8220;Luxury&#8221; Upgrades<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_intercom.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a room without a closet. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_intercom.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_intercom-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This whole house intercom system was leading-edge back in the day. Now? It&#8217;s an unused eyesore.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because the technology exists, doesn&#8217;t make it a great idea. Do you really need a whole house vacuum system? What about the intercoms slash radios slash Internet-device slash whatever else you can throw in there? More often than not, these expensive luxury upgrades aren&#8217;t worth the money you pay for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#6 Faux Wall Treatments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"321\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_faux_paint.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a faux wall paint treatment. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_faux_paint.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_faux_paint-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">My guess is that they had hoped for a better outcome.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen, we all love the look of real, natural stone. It&#8217;s gorgeous! Who wouldn&#8217;t want it inside your home? The answer is, &#8220;None of us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the correct way to get the look of real stone is with&#8230; real stone. Or at least the new artificial stone that actually looks real. Definitely not paint, not now, not ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5 Giant Exterior Columns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"257\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_columns.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of house with oversized columns. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_columns.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_columns-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Just who are you trying to impress?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s face facts, you don&#8217;t live in the White House, the Lincoln Memorial or the Parthenon. Nobody needs to see giant columns attached to the front of your two-story colonials. You&#8217;re not fooling anyone. Let&#8217;s just tone it down a bit and we&#8217;ll all get along better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4 Carpet in Bathrooms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_carpet_bath.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a bathroom with carpet. This is one of the most common bad home design mistakes I see.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The only good thing about this bad home design mistake is that it&#8217;s easily fixed. *shudder* Let&#8217;s move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 Wrong-Sized Rooms for Their Purpose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_sizes.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of two bedrooms, one tiny and one giant. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_sizes.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_sizes-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Here&#8217;s an example of where Form should definitely follow Function.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Human beings are diverse. We all don&#8217;t like the same things. Even still&#8230; there are extremes at either end of the spectrum where space is either desperately needed or overtly wasted. <strong>Good home design<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t make this mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 Statement Pieces that Make the Wrong Statement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_fireplace.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a very ugly fireplace. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_fireplace.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_fireplace-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sure, I&#8217;ve seen uglier fireplaces but you can bet your bottom dollar that this fireplace&#8217;s owner just loves it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas removing carpet from a bathroom is a simple affair, the cost of removing some statement pieces from an otherwise nice home may be cost-prohibitive. I&#8217;ve seen homes where just a few &#8220;over the top&#8221; home design features were enough to send the buyers running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 Almost Zero Storage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"353\" src=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_storage.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a room without a closet. Bad Home Design Mistakes\" class=\"wp-image-7189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_storage.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trepryor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/bad_design_storage-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">By rule, an official bedroom must have a closet but if yours doesn&#8217;t, must resort to silliness like this?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, more than ever, we need places to put our <em>stuff<\/em>. If your home doesn&#8217;t have adequate storage, you know what I&#8217;m talking about. It&#8217;s maddening!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Older homes by nature have smaller closets and many times fewer closets. Modern homes have no excuse. Homes without storage are losers, plain and simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So there you have it. Friend, don&#8217;t let your friends make these bad home design mistakes.
