Spring is a great time of the year. If you’re a homeowner, you already know that there will be some jobs waiting for you once the harsh Winter weather is past. These “jobs” are very important. Some are simply maintenance that you’ve always known your home needs. Some spring home improvement projects are more involved. In either case, you’ll be glad you took the time and money to tackle than to protect or even enhance the value of your most valuable investment—your home.
As we leave colder temps in the rear-view mirror, here are the top five spring home improvement projects that will help you and your home.
Project #5: Preventative Maintenance
Let’s start with the most important things first. When it comes to your home, the foundation and then the roof is the big one-two punch. Once they’re in great shape, everything is a much smaller deal.
So, how are your home’s foundation and roof? If your basement is unfinished, take the time to walk around your basement and check for any leaks or cracking cement. If anything looks amiss, talk to your Realtor about a referral for a great, local foundation company.
The same goes for your roof. You may not want to get up on your roof yourself. If so, grab some binoculars and walk around your house looking for any shingles that might have moved over the course of the Winter. Routine checks are helpful to prevent any major repairs in the future.
Here are some other preventative maintenance projects that are great to do in the Spring:
- Caulking around windows and doors
- Seal the driveway and sidewalk
- Clean the windows inside and out
Project #2: Tune-up AC
Summer may not be here yet but it’s good to be proactive, right? Call your favorite HVAC contractor to come out and give your home’s AC a tune-up before the blistering heat of the Summer arrives. In fact, I need to call mine right now!
Other than your foundation and roof, the HVAC system is the next most expensive part of your home. Preventative maintenance has been proven to extend the life of your system which translates into big bucks. If you’re here in Louisville, I can recommend some great companies, just let me know.
Project #3: Redoing the Deck
Plan to spend some quality time outdoors now that the weather has improved? Sure you are! Now’s the perfect time to make sure your deck is in tip-top shape.
Decks built with Azek or Trex may not need anything more than a simple powerwash. Wood decks need restaining more often than you think. Stay on top of these home improvement projects in the Spring and you’ll have more time during the Summer to relax.
Project #4: Landscaping
Now that your deck is looking sharp, let’s make sure your home’s landscaping isn’t looking sad by comparison. It might take getting your hands dirty but it’s worth it.
Focus on trimming those bushes, edging those beds and make sure to put down some new mulch. This simple project can usually be done on one Saturday then you’re neighbors will be playing catch-up. If you’d rather hire The Local Tree Experts, that’s your call as well!
Project #5: Declutter and Organize
Spring is a wonderful time to start fresh. Clean out those stuffed closets and drawers. Donate to charity anything you haven’t used in the past 12 months. Maybe recycle some items as well.
Any time you remove items from a space you automatically make that space feel larger. It’s totally worth it. Tackle an organization project and once complete, you’ll feel great about the results. Here’s one Spring home improvement project that will reduce your stress throughout the rest of the year.
